Debt Collecting has unfortunately created a negative perception over the years and one often thinks of a big man knocking on your door, ready to break every bone in your body. Unfortunately there are many people who still attach this stigma to the debt collecting profession.

Since the inception of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005, debt collecting has become much more structured and regulated.

It is in this structured environment where individuals responsible for the negative perception of the profession find it increasingly difficult to survive. The National Credit Act has introduced the Council for Debt Collectors, which all Debt Collectors have to be registered with. The Council for Debt collectors has a code of conduct which every member must obey, failing which a member could be summoned to a disciplinary hearing. This could result in the withdrawal of a member's debt collection certificate.
